Background

Arie Eric De Jong III was the owner of Diamond Environmental Services, a San Marcos-based company that provides portable toilets and other environmental services.

The Case

In May 2018, De Jong was sentenced in San Diego to five months in federal prison for orchestrating a long-running illegal dumping scheme. Between 2012 and 2016, his company avoided millions of dollars in disposal fees by illegally discharging raw sewage from its portable toilets directly into municipal sewer systems in several California cities, including San Diego, San Marcos, Fullerton, and Huntington Park. The company used secret, unmetered hookups to the sewer lines at its various facilities, often concealing them from inspectors by placing portable toilets on top of the connections. The scheme was estimated to have saved the company between $2 million and $4 million. In addition to De Jong's prison sentence, the company was ordered to pay over $4 million in fines and restitution.

The Pardon

On January 15, 2026, President Trump granted De Jong a full pardon.
